McClellan also had political aspirations and with his enormous popularity might have won the '64 Presidential election over Lincoln.

I suspect that he chose not to fight any harder than he did out of a sense that by not causing many casualties on either side, he would not make as many hardened enemies and thus could advance his political ambitions. IMHO.
