I would say it is the fact (IMO of course) that he was an accomplished (proven) liar and paid far more attention to trying to craft his own image than to the welfare of the country. But isn't this true of 99% of politicians? And don't we voters pretty much force them into this position by our pouncing on every little misstep and unguarded comment? Ever read P. J. O"Rourke's Parliament of Whores? It is a hilarious sendup of our elected officials' peccadilloes and I highly recommend it. But at the end of the book, he brings up the depressing thought that we actually get the government we deserve.
