web selling, e-commerce and datamining thereof, which is really a business in its infancy, takes a lot of server capacity though. Somebody has to provide this functionality. Even Dell has to run on Sun. The real issue is the competitive landscape of that high end, you have HP, IBM and Sun, Sun being the smallest company dueling it out. Not a good place to be. Having said that, Sun in the 2's was a dirt cheap, giveaway price given their installed base and assets.

Another thing- Java which is a preferable language for maintanability and scalability is about 1/10 the speed of other (compiled) languages and that means companies shifting to java development need more processing. Thats what happened at Gap Inc. Just a few observations.
