It's only recently that the Civil War has been rightly portrayed as essentially about slavery.

Except that it wasn't.

Did we have war all those decades we had slavery? No, we didn't.

Do you think war would have broken out if slavery had been maintained but the South had not seceded. Doubtful.

The cannon opened when the South asserted what it considered its right to secede and Lincoln became equally determined not to let them.
