Sig,
I think the fix is in to put maximum pressure on saddam or conversely on his potential assassins, while the US gets the extra time it needs to prepare. Also French, Russians and Chinese will have time to get back on the train. Of course this is all contingent on Blix and Bush speak over the next two days. Saddam exiting without war would still be the most desired outcome for all. mike
PS Interesting remark Russians were alleged to have made suggesting that if war comes US should confine it to an air war? Any ideas what they are thinking? Is it a warning about wmd use potential by iraq? It would be something to think about before we put troops in harms way. Can an air war of the type described on cbs friday nite(Shock and Awe) cause that coup? Perhaps with internal iraqi communications in disarray, the shock and awe scenario may give iraqis a better chance to dispose of saddam than they have now. In this scenario, no troops necessary.

Bush maintains his firm stance, but the UN is allowed 2? 4? weeks

I expect a "Were getting ready to go" speech with no firm dates and no smoking gun disclosed yet. He will list things as he did in this UN speech. The smoking gun will be delivered the day before we go, or close to it.
