Offering assistance is good. That's where intervention is appropriate -- when help is freely and lovingly offered. Imposing it against a person's will when they have the capacity to decide whether they want it or not, even if we would not agree with their decision, is what I believe is wrong, as long as they are not a danger to others. As to danger to themselves, that requires more thought as to exactly what the phrase encompasses. After all, in some totalitarian countries, not following the party line is considered a mental defect.
