Well yeah. Some Southerners did not like the idea of growing Northern power and wanted southern states to be protected from it. And for the majority of the real movers and shakers in the 1850-60s that desire was attached to slavery. Some 19th century pro-slave southerners began to use the more philosophically pure debates of the anti-federalists to make their argument for slavery, forgetting that those people largely detested that "excrable traffic" and wished it would somehow end. But when we read the Confederate leaders we find their arguments were by no means pure in philosophy. They almost always referred to the right of states in context of a right to travel with property-- slave property.

State's rights today is nothing but a code used by neo-confederates to avoid the painful fact that the South fought for slavery. And since they are so willing to lie unabashedly in the face of the plain historical record, they obviously can lie when they claim their flag is a matter of "heritage - not hate."

Blacks do a lotta stupid things. But contrary to perhaps much of neo-confederate belief, dey ain' dumb. These folks understand perfectly what they are dealing with and why they ought not be forced to pay with public funds for honoring the Confederacy. They cannot trust us because we are a bunch of disgusting liars. When we start telling the truth - the whole friggin' truth - holding nothing back, then they will trust us when we say we are repudiating the South's wrongs and only honoring what is noble about it.
