I don't know if you have followed the story, but the Kurds have been fighting pitched battles in Northeast Iraq with Ansar al Islam recently. The Kurds are trying to tell anybody who will listen that Ansar takes orders from Iraqi intelligence. As Safire says, the CIA hasn't been interested in listening. Who knows what the real story is, but the connection is neither implausible nor far-fetched imo.

Well, we only have Safire's word on the assertion the CIA isn't listening. As I recall, his sources in the CIA are, generally, the reverse of Hersh's. Not sure what that says in this case. However, the problem is to assert that Saddam has some control in the north. Hard to see.
