You are correct. I've incorrectly argued that the debate is over ideology -- the fact is it is about politics with ideology running a close second.

He is controversial to the extent the Dems decided they don't want conservatives and so seek to attack him in any way they can.

It appears to me that you are biased in favor of a conservative, and so, do not see him clearly.

He was confirmed without a single opposing vote to a lower federal judical position.

Who was doing the voting......fellow Mississippians?

The controversry over him now is do to the political war between the two parties. Its gotten more bitter in recent years and Pikering is caught in the middle.

There's no question its political to a degree......both parties play this game; however, I venture that the Dems. would not have gotten this far had there not been so many problems with Pickerings' resume.
