Yes, he does not belong there, and yet he has to be there, has to prove himself as much as anyone. He is torn from a relatively privileged position to live within a world that is alien to him, and only belongs to him in virtue of color.........

My only regret about Glory was that they did not find a way to include the tremendously moving letter from Shaw's abolitionist parents to the Union authorities who offered to disinter his body from the mass grave with his troops and move it to a military officer's burial ground. They rejected the offer, believing that their son would have wanted to be buried with his soldiers. His parents further wrote that they were pleased and could hope for "no holier place" for Shaw than to be "surrounded by his brave and devoted soldiers."
