If there were solid questions about him in this area he would have little chance of being nominated and no chance for confirmation.

It is interesting that, on the day the committee decided NOT to take his nomination for a vote on the Floor, it was widely believed by Republicans and Democrats alike that a full vote would have resulted in his confirmation by an overwelming margin.

This was one of the worst aspects of the entire deal; i.e., that the Committee was unwilling to take his nomination to the Floor even though it was evident that he would have been confirmed had a vote of the full Senate been taken.

As you said earlier, "Politics".

Pikering is facing a political process. He is being smeared because the democrats want to avoid conservative judges. If there were solid questions about him in this area he would have little chance of being nominated and no chance for confirmation. But some of the democrats in congress or in certain special interest groups will find something, real or not, to smear any conservative with unless he has almost no record, in which case they will attack him for being inexperienced.

Then, apparently, smearing a Conservative is not that hard to do. I haven't looked into the qualifications of many GOP nominees but if Pickering is considered a very good one, then I would consider raising the bar. They did with Lott.
