The French telecomms group plans to sell the TDD broadband wireless equipment alongside its GSM/GPRS and WCDMA service offerings. IPWireless' standards based technology, which complies with the UMTS TD-CDMA spec and can work in the 1.9GHz to 2.5GHz licensed bands, is already integrated and showcased in Alcatel's 3G Reality Centre in Paris. The product line includes a complete network infrastructure solution, PCMCIA cards and pocket-sized wireless modems. The IPWireless gear can deliver two-way data transmission speeds of up to 4.5Mbit/s (in 5MHz of spectrum and 9Mbit/s in 10MHz). Alcatel says it is 'an ideal solution' for cost effective coverage of 'hot zones' and will support its own range of WLAN networks and services, in addition to its UMTS gear. “By partnering with IPWireless, Alcatel will be able to provide mobile network operators with the latest TDD technology and services that deliver data at broadband speeds,” said Alcatel's Mobile Communications COO Marc Rouanne. “The IPWireless solution will enable mobile operators to develop a whole range of new applications and services that users are already demanding, and to offer to their key customers a real end to end continuity of 3G services”. IP Wireless' implementation of the UMTS core network combines the functions of a Radio Network Controller, a Serving GPRS Support Node and a Layer 2 tunneling protocol access controller of an Internet Protocol network into a single hardware and software platform called an Integrated Network Controller. Chris Gilbert, IP Wireless' chief executive officer, said: “It is a big step forward for IPWireless to have Alcatel as a partner and to join Alcatel's 3G Reality Center program. It shows the momentum that IPWireless' broadband technology is building globally.”
