"FEI posts fourth-quarter net loss"

Tuesday January 28, 3:28 am ET

HILLSBORO, Ore., Jan 28 (Reuters) - Semiconductor equipment maker FEI Co. posted a fourth-quarter loss on Tuesday, due in part to costs from the cancellation of a planned merger with Veeco Instruments Inc. (NasdaqNM:VECO - News).

The company posted a net loss of $3.5 million, or 11 cents per share, compared with net income of $8.1 million, or 24 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

The company said it took restructuring charges of $5.5 million and had $3.0 million in merger-related costs.

Net sales fell to $85.2 million from $96.6 million a year ago.

FEI said it expected first-quarter 2003 revenue and bookings to be in the mid-$80 million range. It expected cash earnings of 6 cents to 9 cents per share and GAAP EPS of 4 cents to 7 cents.

Earlier this month, Veeco and FEI called off their $1 billion merger, citing difficult market conditions and the uncertain timing of an semiconductor industry recovery.
