It would be a beautiful system that will protect you from having Napoleons in charge.

But, in bad times, you won't end up with Churchills. Chamberlains only.

What is wrong with giving ourselves direct involvement in the government?

That is what the argument has been about since the Enlightenment. We had the "Federalist Papers," and ended up with the oldest Democracy in the world. The French went the other way, to the mob, and ended up with the "Terror."

How much and what kind of direct participation should we have? Should we post proposed laws on the Internet and let people vote on them daily? Hardly. We have a constant, ongoing fight over protecting the individual from the mob vs giving people a say in everything. That's good.
