No, I remember quite well. However the officers had at least some reason to beat King. Their crime was one of extent. They were doing their job...maybe too much, but still it was their job. I'm not convinced a white guy acting the same way as King wouldn't have been treated the same way that night. If so, it still would be wrong, but not racist. True, they were doing their job......maybe too well. And that was an ongoing complaint in LA....that R. King was not an isolated incident. And I can attest that that complaint was as true as it was not true. For three years, I worked for a City Councilman whose district covered parts of three minority neighborhoods, and one of the major complaints was police harassment. In addition, there was a consistent stream of racist and sexist complaints coming from within the dept itself. In addition, I witnessed the beating of an illegal who was half the size of R. King. It too was overdone. To be honest, the LAPD had an antagonistic attitude that was extremely intimidating. I began to think that that's the way police had to be........until I moved to a new city. There is no comparison between the two attitudes. Having said that, I also recognize that being a cop in LA is a very difficult job and probably explains to a great extent the attitude and the high turnover rate. I am not sure what the solution is to that problem. In the last ten years, the LAPD has not been able to find a police chief that can bring together the diverse factions within the dep't. the other hand, Denny had no reason to be beaten and was a pure expression of racist violence. No question it was motivated by racism and it was disgusting.......at the time,I was maybe twenty blocks from the Denny beating and experienced a lesser degree of that racism. I don't condone racism no matter who the perpetrator is.Hate mail is of no benefit to anyone......so post me only when you have something constructive to say; otherwise, go hit a punching bag when you think the world isn't treating you well. Hate mail? Whatever. Your bar for hate is extremely low. I may not agree with you (ever?) but I certainly don't hate you. Its easy to say that when you are the poster. However, as the recipient, it felt like hate or at least, strong dislike. I responded because you completely glossed over the Denny beating which by any standard is more of a "hate crime" or instance of "racism" than the King beating. Both instances were outrageous, but the Denny instance was far more outrageous than the King instance. Because of my experiences in LA, my sensitivity is strong to both beatings for different reasons. I did not mean to "gloss over" the denny beating. In my opinion it's equally as outrageous as the gay guy that was dragged behind the car. You mean the black man. Yes, I would agree. ted
