Agreed.

I was building out from the scenario (IMO likely) Carl described... just pointing out that it potentially runs both ways.

I do believe that, if even a partial regime change and shift towards the US is succesful in Iraq, the leverage on the Saudis, Syrians, and Iranians (not to mention the Pals) will be significant.

The risks are worth it - even some temprorary chaos would be preferable to the current dynamic in the ME.

What is important is proving our resolve to force improvement/progress towards eventual democracy (a la Afghanistan).
