It would be an absolute thugocracy, and a disaster for the local population, as well as for the peace in the region. "Thugracy", hm. You mean, as opposed to the miserable concentration camp and terrorist breeding farm it is now? There are two important considerations here: 1) We cannot choose the leader of other countries. If they elect a leader we don't like, we just have to live with it. Unless, of course, you feel the US was right about bringing to power the dictator Pinochet against the democratically elected Allende, who reigned terror and was responsible for the death and tortures of thousands. 2) The reason why terrorist groups have such support is because Palestinians have no land, no future, and a suffering we cannot begin to comprehend. They see Israeli settlements grow every day into Palestinian territory. Tanks roll in their streets, bombs fall from the sky. They need to think they have a future to live for. I think that President Bush made the right decision: Show us progress, develop a democratic infrastructure, which would be capable of taking care of the new country, show us that you are able to build a peaceful future – and we WILL step up to your support. Understandable. Except that a peace plan for a nation under occupation is not a billion dollar loan you can dangle in front of a country, to be awarded when they get their act together. Besides, what do you think about the massive aid from the US that goes to finance the settlements and the tanks and missiles that kill the Palestinians?
