Although all concerned vociferously deny it, Europe is indeed beginning to divide -- slowly, unevenly but perceptibly -- into two very distinct camps.

There has never been a homogenous Europe. The coalitions are always changing depending on the topic. Not so long ago Schröder and Blair were close together promoting their "Third Way". Anybody remember it?

Britain and Spain -- also on the Security Council this year -- are just about as fed up with the whole thing as Rumsfeld. The Spanish government has already offered to let the United States use its bases in case of war.

Spain's offering of bases is named as a proof of supporting Rumsfeld? Then Germany is a stout supporter of Rumsfeld. Not only bases are used, but war is actively prepared here. Operation "Victory Scrimmage" has started in Grafenwöhr simulating command structures.

At one point, Germany's justice minister actually refused to hand over evidence incriminating Zacarias Moussaoui, the al Qaeda operative, on the grounds that it might be used to invoke the death penalty in his case.

I have always remained silent on the topic of death penalty and will continue to do so...

For that matter, support for American policy in Iraq might be found in France and Germany if the Bush administration, Rumsfeld included, cared enough to promote it.

Rumsfeld might even find support of the American population if he manages to present more evidence.
