I think in general that people are more generous and empathetic during periods of rising incomes. Hence, the Civil Rights Movement owes something to the willingness of people to make room at the table.
War and opposition to it are different matters. Opposition to Vietnam began during relatively decent economic times and gathered great strength as the economy deteriorated -- pushed along by the war itself. In the current situation, it would seem to me that if war comes, which seems virtually certain, Bush is prepared to repeat Johnson's errors in their totality. So in five years, we may be looking back on the current situation as the good old days.
On the specific question, I have no opinion, altho it seems unlikely. For myself, the market situation is irrelevant. M2
