the device manager task they attempted was simply to remove the device and have windows recognize it again on startup and install the correct drivers...as a USB device

BIOS is something else..something dark and scary..something I cringe at even the thought of altering. I stated all of the above to the HP techie prior to conceding

I'm sure someone hanging here has some good info on the BIOS risks<g>
