The very first democratic vote would install a government based on Islam. So, the very first vote would destroy the democracy.

When a democratic vote is utilized to destroy the democratic system, it's hard to describe such a system as a democracy..

A democracy is more than just a system where votes are cast.. A democracy is an acknowledgement that disputes and conflicts will be put forth to the electorate and resolved peacefully, not through violence. And that the democratic system and process is more important than any particular parties agenda.

All in all, I refuse to adopt the defeatist attitude you display Robert. I have few illusions, but since it's never been tried to any major degree before in that region, there is little data that can be reliably used to say it cannot be done.

And btw, if a governmental system becomes democratic, then the religious side does as well. Which means that various leaders will face off against one another to determine who will represent the will of the electorate.

And if the will is to destroy the democracy and install a theocracy, that democratic system, like our own, will depend upon a professional military to keep any one side from destroying the democratic system.
