Modern terrorism started at the end of the Carter administration and coincident with the Reagan/Bush administration, which saw the first suicide airplane hijackings and a ramp-up in US covert activity in Pakistan and Afghanistan, including nice little things like several million CIA-sponsored schoolbooks, teach kids how to count bombs on the battlefield. Apparently this was to insure decades of fine, well trained terrorists. The upshot of all that were deep contacts with warlords in that area, setting up of training camps, and, eventually, surprise, surprise -- "blowback" against the US, at times convenient to the reigning administration. It stinks.
