Grant was earlier mentioned. While not giving him especially high marks for skillfully orchestrating the controlled chaos of combat, I will give him credit for understanding that the situation required a constant pounding of the Confederates by his numerically superior and better supplied legions.

How about Winfield Scott Hancock? Undoubtedly courageous, inspirational and willing to disregard the prevailing wisdom of frontal assaults on fortified defensive positions. His sledgehammer blow of massed columns, rather than the traditional frontal lines of battle, while not his idea originally but adapted by him on a grander scale, shattered Lee's works at Spotsylvania's Angle and would have carried the day if the planned reinforcements had not bogged down in a nearby swamp.
