Two things have happened in the application server market over the past two years. The J2EE standard application server displaced the proprietary application servers such as Broadvision. The second is that the market became a two horse market with BEA and IBM fighting a death match market share battle. At the very low-end, open source implementations of J2EE are gaining traction. The other item to note is that, so far, .NET is .NOT.

Since IBM and BEA entered the technology depression with the leading market share, I think it is fair to say that the big guys won and the little guys faded.
