Direct access to T-Mobile’s t-zones data portal is also possible. And for the first time in Germany a handover of data links from one UMTS radio cell to another will be demonstrated live. By the end of 2002, two hundred and fifty transmitters (node B) for the UMTS network had been installed in Berlin and Potsdam. Across the whole of Germany, technical preparations for over 3,000 sites are now complete. The third generation mobile phone technology should be in place in around 200 towns and cities by the time the network is launched. To date, T-Mobile Deutschland has invested over 140 million euros in preparing UMTS sites and the necessary systems technology. "

expects about 2 million UMTS handsets to ship next year [edit: 2003 or 2004?] If this expectation were intended for 2003, it would be close to QCOM's own internal estimates of 3 million wCDMA handsets sold this year, per their recent report. Did that strike anyone as somewhat optimistic? Does anyone expect JPhone, Docomo, and hutchinson to line up that many more subscribers this year, from the current base of around 200,000? Be a shame if CDMA handset sales fell short of estimates by 3 million, eh? <g>
