MOL Plc selects Emerson as main automation contractor to modernize diesel oil desulfurization plant
biz.yahoo.com

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 2003-- Emerson Process Management, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR), has been selected by MOL Plc, a leading integrated oil and gas company in Central and Eastern Europe, to supply its automation technology and engineering services for the new Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Oil Desulfurization Plant at the Danube Refinery in Hungary.

The automation installation by Emerson will enable the refinery to produce diesel fuel with a sulfur content less than 10 ppm as required by new European standards that come into effect in 2005. The automation contract is valued at $10 million and marks further expansion of Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture in Eastern Europe.

Emerson will serve as the main automation contractor (MAC) for the project at the MOL Danube Refinery in Szazhalombatta, Hungary. As the MAC, Emerson will perform front-end engineering design (FEED), applications engineering, and project management to complement the PlantWeb digital plant technology. Emerson will install and commission the automation solution, and supply operator training to help MOL personnel run the refinery's new diesel oil desulfurization plant. The plant will be built under a licensing agreement from Haldor Topsoe of Denmark. Plant startup is scheduled for 2004.

"We chose Emerson for this project because they have become a trusted partner to us in our search for the best technological and added value solutions," said Dr. Vilmos Gombas, the Investment Director at MOL. "Control engineering is undergoing a radical change; we feel that if we want to remain within the circle of the top global oil companies we need to accept this worldwide tendency. The PlantWeb architecture to be provided by Emerson will allow us to control our process precisely, using accurate data, as well as giving us opportunities for savings in maintenance and operations by implementing integrated asset optimization technology."

The Emerson PlantWeb architecture will employ its DeltaV(tm) digital automation system with advanced control software to streamline effective control and management of the desulfurization process and plant. FOUNDATION(tm) fieldbus technology networks intelligent field instruments and equipment, powering PlantWeb to collect and deliver process and machinery condition information to the plant's operators. PlantWeb's predictive maintenance capabilities enable high plant availability with reduced maintenance costs.

Emerson will also supply intelligent field instruments that power the PlantWeb architecture, including Rosemount® pressure and temperature transmitters; Fisher® control valves fitted with FIELDVUE digital valve controllers; Rosemount analytical instruments; and Micro Motion® Coriolis flowmeters. These field devices measure and provide diagnostic reporting of their health, and process health, to Emerson's AMS predictive maintenance software within the DeltaV system.

"The refining industry is significantly challenged to meet cost pressures and increasingly stringent environmental demands," commented Peter Ward, vice president of Emerson Process Management in Eastern Europe. "We are pleased to bring our automation expertise and technology to this MOL project. As we installed this technologically advanced architecture, our process solutions team became an integral part of the MOL team to help MOL achieve operational excellence for this project and to meet their business objectives."
