Schroeder is getting payback for what is viewed as a stab in the back.

It's no stab in the back. In his first parliament speech after 9-11 Schröder announced his "unlimited solidarity" in the war on terror, and he is sticking to that promise. In the same speech he said he would not take part in "adventures" (which an Iraq invasion is for him). So this has been known to the USA for 1.5 years, and it didn't prevent Bush from meeting Schröder last May.
