Software Looks Ready to Make a Comeback
Thursday January 23, 9:03 am ET

By James J. Cramer,

We've seen enough to proclaim that software is a comeback area. It joins wireless as a sector in tech "where something good is happening."

How good? We won't know until March, probably. Everyone tells me we saw a lot of "budget dump" in both telecom and software in the fourth quarter. I think that once the budgets were spent, telecom shrank back to where it had been. (Hence, I think the Nortel (NYSE:NT - News)/Alcatel (NYSE:ALA - News) world is only a trade.) But from the looks of things, we have seen genuine improvement at Siebel (NasdaqNM:SEBL - News), PeopleSoft (NasdaqNM:PSFT - News) and Oracle (NasdaqNM:ORCL - News). As someone with a longer-term perspective, I dare not buy these stocks, although I am sorely tempted to. I am afraid I will discover in March that there was a spending blip, which would mean the gains I expect from this troika over the next six weeks will disappear.
