Huge dust cloud

Not a facet of emerging China that is usually discussed. Although not discussed in the article, it sounds as though this dust bowl may be from the loess region west of Beijing. These fine grained soils deposited by winds during the last ice age are at best only quasi-stable. There is a touch of irony that the Huang Loess Plateau sometimes called the "cradle of Chinese civilization", could now be threatening the latest incarnation of that civilization. A sharp edge to the irony stems from contemplating the strong harmony with nature theme of that early Taoist culture.
