My notes from the 1st Q FY03 CC say that China plans to have 18,000 EV/HEV Buses operating by 2008 (Olympics, I think) and a significant number of EV/HEV taxis. Also, only 3 of 5 of our Chinese JVs are presently formed -- two more are coming, and these will mfr our prismatic batteries! (Our present JVs are only for consumer batteries and, I think, cylindrical batteries for small EVs/HEVs, scooters, say). I assume the prismatic batteries will be available for at least the bulk of the EVs/HEVs scheduled by 2008. Since China is already a major NiMH mfg country (also the major supplier of materials for NiMH mfrs worldwide), it makes sense that they intend to market them in other countries as well. However, I suspect we may have an agreement that the U.S market is off limits to them; or that we are to be the U.S. importer (and brander?) of their batteries. And, of course, we expect to get our battery materials from China -- and Russia. ECD has clearly been working wisely on such marketing issues for a long time. Seems to me that Stan is a much better businessman than many give him credit for. IMO, he is not only a genius but he also has exhibited a very practical bent -- and learning business strategy would hardly be difficult for him, if he set his mind to that task, which appears to me to be the case. That said, it might be that he just relied on his BOD and/or the Chiefs of the JVs (like Dahr) for business advice. Further, Stempel must also have had a lot of valuable input to the business planning. Whatever, I see sharp business planning at work. And, now that substantial markets for the PVs and propulsion batteries exist and are burgeoning, I expect to see exciting business growth.
