The Morel of the story, is if you think you can shag the main chance and corner the market in option, you cannot. At the bottom of the pyramid, ALL other side of the trade has to be losers in this case, and if they ain't got the do re mi to back their bets you cannot put or call the stock -- they ain't got it. The Russians and Koreans reneged on their side of the options and left LTCM with nothing to collect. There is also something murkier there as I heard they were borrowing gold and selling it to buy options. I heard that they got caught out, but I am not sure how, as gold was diving in price at the time.
