Will they or won’t they? 31/01/2003 Hutchison Whampoa Ltd’s Hutchison 3G unit has demonstrated its new 3G service and is promising to launch in the UK and Italy in March. This is the third launch date the group has promised, if they go ahead it will be the first European operator to launch the new service. Previously the group has blamed the delays on shortages of 3G handsets. 3G technology allows wireless transmission of large amounts of data, enabling mobile phones to tap into the Internet and send and receive live video footage as well as video and audio clips. It will be interesting for rival operators to see how the technology fares in the European market. 3G has previously been introduced into the Japanese market but has so far received lackluster reactions. Hutchison 3G is working to open its new glitzy flagship store on Oxford Street in central London for the March launch. The company also will sell the phones and service contracts through Hutchison Whampoa's Superdrug chain in Britain and at other mobile-phone shops, including those operated by Carphone Warehouse Group PLC. mobilecommerceworld.com
