I believe "rapid chip" is LSI's way of transitioning away from the ASIC model, or at least responding to a segment of the market for whom ASICs are not practical. Seems as if management is proactive in dealing with changing end markets and customer needs.

By the way, this is the gloomiest I've ever seen this thread (and not without reason--LSI really laid an egg with the last earnings announcement and forecast). LSI is hovering at yesterday's lows which were made before AMAT's announcement, which suggests that lots of bad news is being priced in here.
