The patriotic liberal is as extinct as the dinosaur. They were driven from power in the Democratic party at the height of the pro-Hanoi movement in 1970, and their ranks have dwindled to almost zero ever since. It's all about factions now: black anti-white racists, enviro pseudo-scientific misfits, old fashioned Marxists, militant atheists, tort lawyer barbarian hordes, and Leninist "peoples' revolutionaries". The tawdry political opportunists, who put their personal career promotion ahead of public service, still manage to keep the party at a level of general national influence. But that group is already beginning to shrink in the light of Bush's relatively easy political victories, and will continue to do so as their losses increase in 2004 and 2006.

The Democratic party is in serious trouble in this country. And, while I am Republican, I consider that development, in the longer run, a dangerous condition for the national debate. The party (which I believe will survive yet again), must, over the next several election cycles, throw off those misfit and anti-American factions, and become, once again, a loyal opposition. IMO, that is exactly what we are seeing the beginnings of now, and will see much more of in the next 6 years of the Bush era...
