No.
The September eleventh murders were a tragedy for the people of New Jersey.

Amiri Baraka's offensive political stance in his post 9-11 poetry, and his refusal to step down as poet laureate, were minor compared to that.

UCSD's Quincy Troupe resigns

December 3, 2002
LA JOLLA – UC San Diego professor Quincy Troupe announced today he will resign his position as a professor there as of the end of the academic year.

Troupe, who admitted he padded his resume, was named the state's first official poet laureate in June. The background check for confirmation by the state Senate Rules Committee uncovered the discrepancy.

"I very much regret my lapse in judgment and the problems it has created for my department and the broader UCSD community," Troupe states in his resignation letter.

UCSD Chancellor Robert Dynes said the decision reflected "our shared view" that teachers should be role models and display "intellectual honesty."

Officials checking Troupe's background after he was named the state's poet laureate discovered he did not earn a bachelor's degree from Grambling College, as he stated in his resume. Troupe resigned the poet laureate post in October.

His admission prompted UCSD to review a violation of its faculty code, involving the false resume. Officials said Troupe's decision to resign brings that review to a close.

"Although I understand and agree with Quincy's decision to step down," Dynes said, "he will be greatly missed as a colleague and friend who brings prodigious talent to the classroom, to his writing and to his role as a national figure in the arts."

"His decision reflects our shared view that teachers are role models who must uphold the intellectual honesty we cherish as a community of scholars," he added.

Until the end of the academic year, Troupe will fulfill his teaching obligations as a professor of American and Caribbean literature and creative writing. He also speaks to student groups about education, creativity and integrity.

When the padded resume came to light, Troupe said he had been persuaded by someone 30 years ago to claim the degree on his resume. He reportedly said he had studied political science in 1957 and 1958, then left for the Army before graduating.

But the San Diego Union-Tribune later reported that Troupe attended Grambling for only one semester, never took a political science class and flunked most of the few courses that he took.

Troupe, who has published more than a dozen books, was named the state's first official poet laureate in June. The background check for confirmation by the state Senate Rules Committee uncovered the discrepancy.

As one of the senior members of the UCSD literature department, he reportedly makes $140,900.
