My condolances. Dont blame yourself. 90% of investors held. My 80 year old parents like many were hit very hard in the first two Bush years. They considered it patriotic to hold stocks. They now are back to skimping and saving. Without Medicare they'd be bankrupt. Or my Dad would get no medical care. These are the Bush years. Some say it's a boom-bust cycle. Maybe. But I'd say starting with their phony energy crisis and cheating in the elections they poured gasoline on simmering coals. Now what happens when Baby Boomers start retiring and we have the collosal Bush debt to pay.

My 401K lost about the same as his IRA. Down 18.9%+ The total amount in the account is higher now but only because I am contributing 15% of my gross (+3% matching) to the account.
