Ian,

Points well taken.

But one thing that was in AMAT's favor was the calendar. Since AMAT reports in an off month, a month later than most other suppliers, they should be able to report improving order trends, since improving order trends and firmness is what others have reported recently. The report itself is actually not the most distressing part; but the fact that they must warn to such a degree even with the calendar in their favor makes me take a wait and see attitude to what they will say on their conference call.

One more point. In giving their guidance, they should have reported a worst case scenario. They have been in the midst of a downturn for many Q's now and did not have any visibility when they reported. Why they did not go with a number they could beat I have no idea. Needless to say, this CC will be more important than most.

Brian
