- if we take Iraqi oil fields we don't need to give the Saudi's any more money. In fact we'd have enough to pay for the war, the national debt and rescue social security

You're out in la-la land ... The US has no right or authority to "take" any oil fields. Those belong to the Iraqi people.
Anyone who said that publicly would just confirm ROW's fears of kleptocratic, lawless empire-building ... even more than what's going on already.

Any new gov't emerging out of the smoking ruins of Iraq will have to sell that oil, and the US will have to pay for it, so there will be no payoffs of nat'l debt etc etc. We will have to continue to pay, my friend, now, next year and for decades to come, for this little Bush adventurism in the ME. That's not including a trillion or two of domestic terror costs.

This is a bad deal, first of all slaughtering innocents on your hands personally as a supporter of this action, destroying US reputation as bad as it already is, costing treasury a goodly fraction of a trillion dollars, and causing domestic upheaval and continued economic distress.

Other than that, of course it's a great idea ... -g-
