"Just like the Taliban, I doubt that most of these "experts" ever heard of them prior to 9/11.. I for one sent what amounts to one months income, to support refugies fleeing Afghanistan, almost a year before 9/11. At the same time I argued vigorously with people who bashed the lifestyle of the typical Afgan. I argued with my right wing friends several years ago when the massive deaths of innocent Iraqi children and villagers were going unchecked. Many of them (almost all) listened, understood, and showed compassion for the suffering of innocent Iraqis. I often agree with left winger positions and many lefties here have been quite fair and considerate toward me...even when they disagree with me. I see expressions of understanding and compassion on all sides and often (although not unanimously).
