Not a naive question. The U2 is vulnerable to missile attack either surface to air or air to air. It flies high but it is a slow plane. The USSR and Cuba each shot down one U2. This is unlike the SR-71 Blackbird which flew much faster - on the other side of mach 3 (>2200 mph). Unfortunatley this plane was retired in 1997.

IMO it is used to illustrate Iraq's propensity to hide the ball even tho the UN said it was okay.
