X,

re:Why would that be odd? S. Korea is pretty cosmopolitan

Mostly because Americans think they're so cosmopolitan or that the rest of the world doesn't make films - everyone loves a good hollywood film - even Kim Jong Il and Saddam.

It was odd that I had to leave America to see the USA. For all it's faults it's still the greatest country on earth bar none.

Also, Korea only had two TV channels when I got there and eight when I left. They also began getting channels from Hong Kong and two NHK (Japanese) stations.

I'll never forget when I plugged in my huge 32" TV (at least my Korean landlord was impressed) and began deleting all the channels I had programmed in from Long Beach California. After I had deleted about 50 channels my new landlord asked how many channels we had in the USA. I said about 95 cable channels ignoring the religous and Spanish ones. Then I asked him how many channels they had in Korea. Three if you include AFKN (Armed Forces Korea Network).
