Frank,

Thanks for the Sullivan observations. I typed my last post in a bit of a hurry. Should have added that I'm very well aware of his views on homosexuality, having used the book in a course once to offer an overview of contrasting views. It's quite good and Sullivan's biases are quite evident, much to his credit.

My question, and I don't recall whether he addresses this in his book or not, is his own view of the just how critical his sexuality is to his political self.

I'm with you on the Oakeshott reference. The name is familiar but I've never, seriously, read his work.

The review of Sullivan's book is interesting. If you haven't yet read it, you might wish to take a look.

But that review and I don't think the book, actually addressed the question of his willingness to place himself in political coalitions with folk who were opposed to gays. And, should he do so (I don't think he was as yet quite so avowedly a conservative when he wrote this book) how that fit with his own view of his sexuality.

Thanks for the response.
