I like GLW for the reason you mention -- diversity -- in particular, I think the LCD display business looks attractive -- they make over half of the LCD displays in use today. Also, their balance sheet has been cleaned up a lot by the recent sale of a $2B asset.

The interesting thing about this sale is that they managed to sell the projection display business for top dollar when it ought to be a declining line of business. With the money received, they were able to pay off a lot of the near-term ('05) debt which the markets were so concerned about.

OTOH, I don't know when or if fiber will be back. In the late 70s I was a systems analyst for a microwave consulting firm. At the time, the LD business was consumed with microwave. Then, one day, we woke up and microwave was out and fiber was in. I certainly don't rule out the idea that something so radical could happen again.
