From what I'm hearing the NASA official say, the impact of the debris on the left wing at launch was studied and ruled, "acceptable" and no further investigation was ordered. He said that this may look like the smoking gun, yet it may be something entirely different. However, if it was indeed ice (very heavy) that hit the wing, then their assumption of it being insulation foam (very light) doomed the Columbia to certain destruction.

They say there were no capabilities to space walk, video or even spare tiles for repair. It is increasingly appearing that the public fingers are going to point at the debris, regardless of further investigation.

Lots of interesting info to come for sure. I think I've had enough for one day.
