Go ahead and defend Enron and their co-conspirators. Your choice. 100 billion is an easy round figure. 20 billion alone in California, but energy price spikes took place almost everywhere in the US. And it was all manipulated. We have an honor system in this country vis a vis energy prices. But when they want to gouge no one can really stop them except competition. And when they are all in collusion with the support of a team like Bush-Cheney (at the very least, extremely sympathetic to their concerns in exchange for tens of millions in contributions) they can take us all to the cleaners. This phony energy crisis now results in cuts for health care, education, loss of jobs, etc. etc. meanwhile new conspirators have been brought to justice, Kenny Lay walks free, energy fears were used to promote environmental enforcement deregulation, James Baker is still unofficial White House counsel, oil is at $34 a barrel and the gouged money seems to have just disappeared. I'll bet a big chunk of it's sitting in offshore accounts. Kenny Lay claims he's broke. I very much doubt it. My parents live in Houston and the Caymans are often visited by rich folks there. And not just for the sunny beaches.
