$CPC - CBOE Options Put/Call Ratio

Based on daily data from the CBOE:

Using Vesselin's chart settings we can look for short term buy signals when the put to call ratio rises above 1.00 and sell signals below 0.50 and improve on that a bit by the use of this chart which will update automatically at the end of each trading day.

As a short term trading indicator we can expect the trend to change when the Put/Call ratio reaches within 5% of one of its Bollinger bands. At that time the current short term trend is likely to reverse and make a move in the opposite direction. Since this is a contrarian indicator, one is supposed to bet on the market doing the opposite. (Like, expect the market to go up when the CPC reaches the upper Bollinger band and expect it to go down when it reaches the lower band or at least within 5% of the bands.

Friday's close of 0.87 is more than 10% below the upper Bollinger Band at 0.99 so we have no clear short term buy signal yet but it could come on Monday. Last week the put to call ratio closed above 1.00 on Monday and the market did indeed rally the next day. What we need is to see several days with the put to call ratio over 1.00 in the next few days to weeks to help us see that an actual bottom is being formed.
