A VIX reading over 50 most certainly has acted as a confirming factor for timing market bottoms throughout this bear market.

Does it add anything to our ability to confirm market tops and bottoms? You bet it does and I know you know it.

Check out this chart and compare the way the SOX has rallied after the VIX peaked over 50 with an RSI of 70 or higher and then fell:

Conversely check out the way the SOX (and AMAT) falls after the VIX bottoms and fear once again rises.
