that I hope might soften your stance somewhat.

Thanks George.

Its funny, in the research I do for the Civil War thread, it becomes more and more clear to me that people's motivations have not fundamentally changed since that time.

An elected official gets into politics hoping to make a change for the better, then finds that he has to wear down his soul with compromise and that he is beholden to his benefactors.

Maybe he can do a little thing that is not that far from his belief system that will benefit friends or family, why not?

And all those yammering folks from the press, wanting a scoop and determined to build one, or trying to catch him in a silly statement.

Then comes the day that he really up messes up bigtime, puts his trust in the wrong person or has a plan go awry. Its bad enough to screw up when only a few folks know, but with the prospect of the world watching and judging?

So immediately, the only thing that matters is to cover his hindmost parts: files go missing, pages are omitted, investigators are smoothed with soothing answers.

But was that official ever truly evil? Not at all, he was a fallible human, caught up in a system that rewards lies and shuns truths.

We get the government we deserve.
