Eric.. Re..He needs cash because the Chinese and the Soviet Union have stopped giving him aide after the cold war ended. Everyone now demands NK pay for things in cash, that's why he sells missles.

That I know. All of the communist satellites have been cut off, including Cuba. That doesn't necesarily mean he doesn't care what happens to his people, Kim could be powerless to stop the starvation, without taking drastic steps. I said that because, unlike Iraq, where half of the population lives on UN food aid, because Saddam is wasting the money on palaces etc.; Kim isn't gassing or torturing a lot of people, or wasting money on palaces etc. Yes the communist system has failed, but Kim isn't your average brutal dictator, just a failed one. However I could be wrong.

East Germans watched West German TV and radio, NKoreans know nothing about the South.

True up to now. Kim is building a railroad connecting Russia, and China to SK and ostensibly, Japan will ship their product on it. This railroad should open up NK, along with border crossing points allowing travel betweeen the Koreas.

lived in South Korea for eight years, my wife's Korean and we do get the news.

AFAIK , reunification was a major tenet of Dae Jungs sunshine policy, and Rooh promised to continue it.

Eric, <Frankly the South doesn't want unification, they don't want the cost - two countries is fine with them.>

Are you talking about liberals, conservatives, or both? Seems to me that the entire Sunshine Policy revolves around greasing the skids toward reunification.
