Buchanon is still very conservative but detests Bush's neo-conservative philosophy which seeks, in essence, to control most of the world, at least from a military standpoint. Ironically this is being championed by a group of men who have never even served in the military. That is why they're called "chickenhawks". This aggressive strategy may good good and macho, but it means having our soldiers stationed virtually everywhere around the world at once and being responsible for all troublemakers. It is a hugely expensive strategy, spreads our forces too thin, makes us very imperialist-looking and invites more terrorism out of resentment against us. Ironically Bush promised to be a humble isolationist president during the debates. He either lied or changed, or a combination. Frankly, I think we should start closing foreign bases and completing the post Cold War transition. The final key to our security will be to get off oil as our primary energy source so we can call the troops home from the Gulf. Bush is leading us in the opposite direction thanks to his oil ties. Make no mistake, Iraq is at least 50% about their oil, whether Bushies will ever admit it or not. That is part of the neo-conservative strategy, to replace OPEC as the #1 oil power in the world. But at what cost? How many more 9-11's? And can 40 billion a year on Homeland Security even stop them? Add that cost and the cost of wars in the Guld to the price we REALLY pay for oil. Plus all the pollution.
